So I may actually do all three of your requests, darling. Because YOU KNOW ME TOO WELL.
First up: all new interpretation of a female Holmesian adaptation! I’m really, really fond of the entire concept of modern-day Holmes for a variety of reasons, so let’s jump on that bandwagon. We have Indira Varma as Holmes, which I cannot take credit for as fancasts go; whoever decided she would work is a genius, though. She has the ability to play ‘sharp’ and I think that’s what I’d want this Holmes to be- sharp, and very capable of cruelty without being herself a really cruel person, and definitely somebody looking from the outside in when it comes to the rest of the world. Prone to mood swings and forgetting how to function in day to day life and all that stuff from the original canon.
Angel Coulby, again not my fancast (this was an Elementary fancast with Liu as Holmes IIRC) but oh my goodness, I LOVE THIS IDEA. She’d be a very firm, down to Earth but by no means dull Watson IMO and I think she’d just be marvellous. I’d sort of see her as a Watson who was a mediator between Holmes and everyone else- not as normal as people expect her to be, not as much of an oddity as Holmes.
Then, and this is probably a fancast everyone will scratch their head at, Catherine Tate as Lestrade. I don’t know, I just think it fits; I think she could play a female Lestrade off with a good balance of humour and actual competence, and also I really like Tate. I’d definitely want her to be someone competent, but very much restricted in a way Holmes isn’t, and maybe the tiniest bit envious of that but too principled to let go of due process like Holmes does.
Finally, Alex Kingston as Irene Adler, my original wish for her casting in Sherlock. Because I love the idea of a slightly older Irene, I love the idea of someone as funny and flirty and fun as Kingston, I love the whole concept. Irene should be someone who approaches everything with her all but who keeps a little part of herself aside to analyse every situation carefully, and who has a flair for the dramatic.
Sherlock sits with knees pulled up against her chest, arms locked around her legs.
“Sometimes I think,” she says quietly, “my whole life is spent in one long effort to escape from the commonplaces of existence.”
“Well, the commonplaces of existence are waiting for you to wash your hair and change out of that dressing gown,” Watson says, adding the finishing touch to The Adventure of the Copper Beeches with a swirl of the pen she bought him for Christmas. “Dinner’s in twenty minutes.”
Sherlock looks out the window, unable to stare unseeing even if she tried.
All my excitement over Elementary with DOCTOR JOAN WATSON MOTHERFUCKERS, plus pledging with James to go take over Hollywood and make a girl!Sherlock adaptation a real thing made me think it’s time to bring this fine lady back. I LOVE YOU SO MUCH BB, once my Thor fic is done I’ll set all my attentions to finishing your fic, I PROMISE.

Goddd I am getting more into JLM’s acting as Holmes more every time I see those clips.
He just looks really intense and weird and vaguely off kilter and there are odd silences and weird moments of staring and he has no sense of timing or manners but he’s seemingly not malicious, and he makes awkward apologies and gives strange compliments and his expressions are clearly ones that are, well, EMOTIONAL but not necessarily on the spectrum of emotions people are used to? And I just think that JLM plays him off (so far, from trailers) with body language and expressions that are just… very Holmes, and a very INTERESTING version of Holmes, and a Holmes that makes me want to know more immediately.

Seriously, though, no way in hell would any Holmes not use any useful technology. Holmes PRE-EMPTED half the shit used by police officers! He would absolutely use Google.
Also, I actually love this moment. Any Holmes who follows the canon enough to acknowledge that he cannot do anything and everything at the drop of a hat is fine by me. Because yes, Holmes isn’t always right or on the money in canon. (“Norbury”, everyone.) (If you get that we can be best friends just saying.)

Oh man so Lucy Liu looking FANTASTIC as Joan aside (but seriously, between this and seeing Kill Bill vol. 1 I am WELL ON MY WAY to being a big Lucy Liu stan tbh she seems FAB and incredibly talented and awesome), which I have already made clear- I am really digging JLM’s Holmes? I’d heard he was a good actor and a good choice, but I haven’t seen anything with him in it (yet, until Frankenstein obvs). I like that he’s playing Holmes off as far from emotionless but as displaying and having them in a sort of vaguely… not ‘off’ but maybe ‘off kilter’ way? He comes across in this extended trailer thingy to me as someone who genuinely just perceives the world in a unique way. I like that in a Holmes.
And it’s one thing I will admit Cumberbatch’s Holmes actually DOESN’T give me. I don’t like to compare them, because they are different Holmeses in different adaptations! But since they are both in shows I plan to be watching that are somewhat similar, just this once: I love Cumberbatch’s Holmes, but I never quite believe he’s anything but a person who looks at the world as someone who is cynical and has difficulty connecting with people emotionally. Whereas something in JLM’s… manner? I guess? Is *already* convincing me that this might be a man who just approaches life from the other side, as it were.
I mean, we’ll see if that actually plays out. But he seems to be a good choice for Holmes indeed.
And I see Sherlock fandom, incidentally, is still displaying astounding ignorance over the fact that ‘I haven’t heard of him, HE MUST BE CRAP!!!’. Despite panting over Cumberbatch being in Frankenstein with him. Did nobody in this fandom look at the fucking cast list outside of Benedict?
