In general, this is not a spoiler free blog. I tag everything obsessively and text usually goes under a cut for a while, but be warned! I use trigger warnings, but for an idea of what this blog contains, check the "warnings" page at the top. Some triggers are sometimes warned for only in tags (to be blocked)- if this is a problem, please proceed at your own risk. If you have a specific trigger that you want to be able to block I can absolutely add a specific tag- please ask!

The tag I use for flashing images is GIFs, if you need to block them. .

“Not everything is deducible”- I am still so, so happy this sentiment was in that trailer? I feel like I’m making a mountain out of a molehill here, but we only have molehills to work with right now, so I think I’m entitled. But no, I am just so glad, because the thing is, Sherlock Holmes in his original canonical incarnation DID have flaws. He was not the smartest man in the world. He was not even the smartest man in London; Mycroft would, canon says, take that role. He loses cases, he makes mistakes, and sometimes it’s even because he deduces things wrong.

And I just hate it when adaptations refuse to acknowledge it. (I was so excited when Sherlock acknowledged it, then so annoyed when it was only acknowledged as a joke- ‘Harry is short for Harriet’ and that’s… it? Really? Even this is more than that already, because it’s a fairly large thing about an on-screen character.) And I like what this can do for their relationship, too. Joan Watson is going to know immediately that she is not one hundred percent an open book to be read at his leisure, and she’s going to know immediately that he isn’t flawless, and I think that is so important to the Holmes-Watson relationship, and especially to this one. That Watson not gain a flawless impression of Holmes as incapable of mistakes.

I don’t know, I’m rambling. I have a lot of Feelings about adaptations’ tendencies to deify Holmes. It’s… frustrating. It detracts from what I genuinely love about the character. And it makes it so much harder to appreciate and enjoy any Watson-Holmes dynamic, because it makes them so unequal.
